Here at So Sew Pretty we offer a variety of relaxed, fun & sociable workshops. You’ll learn heaps of new skills, meet like minded folks & find out how fun and rewarding it can be to make your own. Workshops are taught by Leah & from time to time by other invited crafty souls, keen to pass on their passion & expertise to others. Our inspiring & creative studio/workshop space at Solway House is situated within the stunning grounds of the Crichton in Dumfries, South West Scotland. We’re just over an hour away from Glasgow and just a hop & a skip over the border, with Carlisle around 45 minutes away.
Hand Stitched Portraits

We are thrilled to welcome along Marna Lunt to So Sew Pretty again, we had such a wonderful weekend at her previous workshops and delighted she’ll be returning to share her passion and expertise at her brand new hand embroidered portrait workshop.
Marna is based in the North East of England, on the border of the North Yorkshire Moors where she grew up. Her roots are in fine art and she’s been extensively trained in the field, Marna now spends most of her time sewing and dabbling with textiles to create her artwork. Marna’s work is full of texture and colour, using vintage threads, buttons and an eclectic combination of fabrics from her collection. Her creations are all hand stitched, full of personality, soul and the hope that they will be treasured forever, a modern day heirloom in the making. Her work has featured in Mollie Makes and she was awarded Editors Choice Award at Country Living Christmas Fair too.
Spend an inspirational day with Marna filled with gentle stitching, chatter and creating a hand stitched portrait of you or a loved one to take home at the end of class.
On the day you’ll learn a variety of embroidery stitches and how to appliqué with different threads and materials, how to find your own inspiration and style, how to draw your own design from a photo or drawing and transfer it to a fabric design and learn to use fabric, textures, stitch and colour to produce a beautiful simple portrait. Marna will be on hand to give tips, ideas and lots of advice as she shares her own inspiration and processes to create her textile art.
All materials are included in the workshop so just bring yourself and heaps of enthusiasm.Fabric from our stash, threads, yarns, bondaweb, vintage buttons, fabric glue and tools of the trade provided too. Plus a homemade lunch, tea, cake & teatime treats to keep you fuelled throughout the day.
LEVEL: Advanced stitchers who already have hand sewn before.

Brooches & Embroidered Wall Hanging

I am delighted that Marna will be joining us here at So Sew Pretty once again. Escape the hum drum and enjoy a relaxing and inspiring day with Marna, chatting with like minded folks and creating your very own hand stitched wall hanging and brooches. You’ll arrive empty handed but leave with wonderful handmade creations and I’m sure lots of lovely new friends and memories too!
Join Marna at this workshop suitable for beginners, making beautiful wall hangings and brooches, you can choose to make what you fancy or both! Using linen and fabrics and layers of appliqué flowers, embroidery and buttons you’ll learn to create something beautiful to hang in your home. Marna will also bring along some of her images transferred to fabric and with different stitches and even a crochet edging you’ll create a brooch you can proudly wear on your lapel.
If you have any special & treasured bits and pieces at home e.g buttons, linen or even clothes you’d like use then please feel free to bring them along to class to make your own wall hanging or booch even more personal. Marna will show you lots of lovely ways and ideas in which to use them. She’ll be on hand to give lots of advice and guidance on new stitches.
