Nature & Thread Therapy
14th & 15th July 2018
Marna is a renowned textile artist whose work is influenced by her fine art background and her work is akin to drawing with a needle. Using colours and textures her painstaking hand stitched pictorial artworks are full of life and personality, which is a description that perfectly matches her.
In 2016 Marna featured in pilot for BBC3 Make! Craft Britain. The program demonstrated her work and talent for hand embroidery whilst capturing her warmth and inclusive approach to creativity. Over the past year she has been led by botanical projects and has reinstated her roots in drawing. On this exclusive two day retreat Marna will gently lead you through both her artistic and stitch processes to capture the beauty in nature.
“Starting with a walk in the grounds of the Welbeck estate we will feel the weather, listen to the landscape and discuss our experiences of the surroundings. We will explore the shapes and feelings of colours, the details often forgotten about when creating. Then back at the studio we will get the paints out to describe the landscape or foliage we have seen. You will be well supported in this and Marna will gently guide you through painting blocks, mixing colours, layering and washes to demonstrate how simple shapes can portray the landscape easily. We will then expand on our experiments with paint by stitching into the paper and paint sketches we have created.
Interpreting and transferring our findings we will work onto fabric on day two, focusing on the technique named thread painting. Marna will demonstrate shading and painting with thread where colours, tones and textures are blended to create powerful images. Working on either a simple linen ground or on top of appliqué you will begin to translate your botanical studies into an embroidery project that will remind you of the time you made for yourself with like-minded people and hopefully revitalise your creative soul. £150.00 inc lunch and materials. 10-4pm
